Man accused of killing Katy girlfriend in custody in Mississippi

KATY, Texas – A Houston area native is behind bars, awaiting extradition on murder charges for the killing of his girlfriend who was a Katy native.

The couple had been living together in Austin and the alleged killer was located after fleeing to Mississippi.

Kevin Michael Waguespack, 32, is in custody in Mississippi, charged with the murder of his girlfriend, a Katy native, 31- year-old Catherine Dyer.

Investigators say Waguespack, who lived with Dyer in a home in Austin, fled 500 miles to Adams County, Mississippi.

Police found Dyer's body Monday night after a mutual friend says he received a disturbing call from the accused killer.

Neighbors say earlier in the evening they heard fighting coming from the home.

"She was crying," recalls neighbor Mark Rangel. "A bunch of yelling, a lot of things being knocked down, a bunch of I guess punching walls. A lot of things just falling down."

Austin detectives say that before Waguespack left town Monday he himself called 911 and said he had killed Dyer.

Deputies in Mississippi took him into custody Wednesday at his family's home after a brief standoff.

In a statement to Channel 2 Dyer's family, who were too distraught to speak on camera, says "The world is a darker place without Catherine. Mike could have walked away. He didn't have to kill her. We love her more than you can imagine."

Austin detectives have not released a motive for the killing.

Waguespack is being held on one count of felony murder and is awaiting extradition from Mississippi back to Travis County.
