HOUSTON - The man accused of killing a toddler has surrendered to authorities.
Barry Wayne Jones, 30, was taken into custody Friday afternoon.
Court documents state that on November 12, 2009, Jones beat his ex-girlfriend's two-year-old daughter.
According to court records, the girl was taken to Texas Children's Hospital with injuries including bleeding of the brain, brain swelling, arm and rib fractures, in addition to trauma to her spine. The toddler died as a result of her brain injury the next day.
Community activist Quanell X stood by Jones' side as he surrendered and believes he is not guilty.
"He says there is more to this story than has been told," Quanell X said. "He believes it's a disgruntled ex who has all of a sudden changed her story and has now gotten him in trouble because he has chosen to be with someone else."
Jones is charged with murder.
