MONTGOMERY COUNTY - Arson investigators are trying to figure out what started a house fire that turned deadly in Montgomery County.

The fire broke out around 4 a.m. Sunday in the Big Oaks subdivision near Lake Conroe.

When fire crews arrived at the home on Lakeway Drive, they saw flames shooting from the roof.

While putting out the flames, firefighters found a body. Family members confirmed to Local 2 that the homeowner, Estanislao "Sam" Torres, died in the fire.

An autopsy confirmed Torres died as a result of smoke inhalation.

Officials said one firefighter was transported to Conroe Regional Medical Center for heat exhaustion and was later released.

Authorities said their initial investigation revealed the fire originated on the home's porch and spread quickly into the interior of the home.

Investigators do not believe the home had working smoke detectors.

Officials said their investigation continues into the cause of the fire.
