HOUSTON – A woman is dead after being attacked by a dog in Liberty County.
The Liberty Co. Sheriff's Office says they received a call from the woman's husband at around 10:30 Monday morning asking to check on her. He said he was worried because she called him to say the dog bit her.
When authorities arrived at the front gate of the home on CR 6478 in The Woodland Hills subdivision, they say the dog confronted them. Deputies say the husband told them over the phone that it was OK to shoot the dog. A deputy fired a shot at the dog and it ran to the other side of the property.
The dog returned and deputies say they shot it two more times, hitting the dog at lease once. The dog then escaped underneath the fence and ran through a wooded area.
Deputies say once inside the home, they found the woman, Linda Oliver, lying on the living room floor. Oliver, 63, was deceased and had lost a large amount of blood, apparently from the attack.
Investigators believe Oliver tried to rescue a smaller dog from being attacked, when that dog turned on her and attacked her.
Her husband told deputies the dog is a stray they had been feeding for about two weeks. The dog's owner is unknown.
The Liberty Co. Sheriff's Office says they are still searching for the dog. They say it's a "large longer haired dog, black in color with white on his chest and covered with blood."
Citizens should not approach the dog, but call police instead.
