Suspected hit-and-run driver charged

HCSO: Victim critically injured

HARRIS COUNTY – A man is accused of critically injuring a bicyclist and leaving him on the road in northwest Harris County.

Deputies investigating the crash said the victim was on a bike riding down FM 1960 Tuesday night.

According to witnesses, as the cyclist approached Falcon Street, a pickup truck hit him from behind.

Deputies said the man was thrown from the bike and was so badly injured he was taken by helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Texas Medical Center in critical condition. He is expected to survive.

The driver of the Ford pickup did not stop, but witnesses managed to get his license plate, according to Deputy Dan Drake with the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

Drake said those witnesses called deputies, who were able to use the information to find the driver's home.

"The driver was still occupying the truck and he appeared to be unresponsive in the driver's seat," Drake said.

Drake said the driver appeared to be intoxicated. He was taken downtown for questioning and will be tested for drugs and alcohol.

The sheriff's office said the driver, identified as 55-year-old Hoang Xuan Nguyen, is charged with failure to stop and render aid.
