Man falls to his death escaping car fire

HCSO: Victim crashed car just before his death

HOUSTON – A man fell 100 feet to his death while trying to escape his burning car in east Harris County.

Deputies said Joe Campos Jr. was heading southbound on Beltway 8 to the westbound East Freeway exit ramp when he lost control of his vehicle and hit a concrete barrier.

The force of the crash caused his 1991 Thunderbird to catch fire.  The impact also made it impossible for him to open the driver's side door.

He climbed out of the driver's side window, but lost his balance, officials said. He fell at least 100 feet onto the exit ramp below.

He was pronounced dead on the scene.

The accident is under investigation.
