HARRIS COUNTY – A violent crash left two people dead and shut down part of FM 1960 for hours during Friday morning's commute.
More than 12 hours after a fatal crash on FM 1960 at Wortham, utility workers are making repairs. Harris County sheriff's investigators say 24-year-old Danyra Montoya was driving a black Chevy Camaro south on 1960 with Brian Montoya as a passenger. Investigators say Francis Layton was driving a red Volkswagen north on 1960 when Layton tried to make a left-hand turn.
"He was turning left into a parking lot, as he turned left, he drove into the path of a Camaro traveling westbound on 1960," said Sgt. S. Wolverton, with the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
Friends said Layton was going back to a restaurant to retrieve a jacket. Investigators believe Danyra Montoya was speeding when the Camaro hit Layton's car and say Danyra might have been impaired by alcohol.
Deputies say the impact was so severe it threw Layton out of his Volkswagen. His car's engine landed down the street. Layton, 23, died at the scene.
"The Camaro continued westbound where it struck a utility pole on the passenger side," said Sgt. Wolverton.
The accident trapped Brian Montoya inside the Camaro. First responders used the Jaws of Life to free him. Brian Montoya, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Charges are pending in the investigation, according to deputies. The crash remains under investigation by the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
The accident closed the intersection for hours sending traffic into parking lots. The road is open again. But two lives ended with a single traffic accident.
