BAYTOWN, Texas - Authorities are investigating a stranger danger incident near a Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District elementary school.
Baytown police say officers were called to Victoria Walker Elementary on Seabird Drive on Wednesday morning in response to a suspicious vehicle in the area.
A school security told police a fifth-grader was walking to school around 7:30 a.m. that morning when he was approached by a woman driving a beige SUV.
"This is the first time in a long time we have had anyone make a report like this. We take this seriously, very seriously", said Detective Luzette Watkins.
The 9-year-old told authorities the vehicle stopped on Garth Road and the woman asked if he needed a ride to school. He said she also offered him candy to get in her car.
The boy told police he told the woman "no" and walked the rest of the way to school.
A junior high school teacher in the area told police saw the student talking with someone in a white SUV. The teacher told the boy to inform the principal about the incident.
According to Baytown police, the student described the suspicious person as a black woman who was 20-30 years old. She was wearing a black shirt and a "red fabric accessory covering her head and hair."
Police have increased their presence at all Goose Creek CISD schools while they continue investigating this incident.
Victoria Walker Elementary Principal Renee Meyer sent a letter home informing parents about the incident.
Meyer encouraged parents to talk to their kids about being safe and to remind them "not to talk to strangers and never to get into a vehicle with anyone unless they have permission."
Parents with questions or concerns should call the school office at 281-421-1800.
