Local boy 'crowdfunds' for family after friend's dad dies

HOUSTON – Just two days before Christmas, a girl in Tomball lost her dad.  Her 11-year-old friend, David Carnahan, wanted to help.  He is a sixth grader at Northpointe Intermediate School in Tomball ISD.

With the help of his mom, he created a GoFundMe.com site.  He posted a picture of him and his friend, Jollie Fowler, on the GoFundMe page.

On a video, Carnahan said, "She lost her dad on December 23.  He had no life insurance."

His goal was to raise $1,000.  He quickly raised more than double his goal in just 11 days.  The donations range from $10 to $100.

Carnahan said, "If were to lose my dad, I would be really sad.  So, knowing that she lost her dad, that makes me sad."

The effort quickly raised more than $2,600 with donations from people Carnahan nor his family had ever met.

He told Local 2, "I learned that giving from the heart is better than receiving."

His mom, Jennifer Carnahan, said, "I am shocked. Blown away. It's just wonderful. I feel like the world has wrapped their arms around not only our family and David's story, but also the Fowler family."
