Local 2 puts 3 new diets to the test
The holidays are around the corner, if you're trying to lose weight before then, Local 2 found three new diets that promise to help shed the pounds quickly.
The Detox Diet, The Whole 30 Lifestyle and the Ultimate New York diet are all popular plans that claim they can help you lose weight in a matter of weeks.
The Detox Diet calls for mostly fruit and vegetables. Whole grains like oatmeal, brown rice and quinoa are allowed. Lean proteins can be added at dinner if needed. No sugar, alcohol or caffeine is allowed.
The Whole 30 Lifestyle Diet eliminates sugar, alcohol, caffeine, dairy, wheat, oats/grains, beans and legumes.
You're encouraged to eat real foods like - meat, seafood, eggs, tons of vegetables, some fruit, and plenty of good fats from fruits, oils, nuts and seeds. Eat foods with very few ingredients, all pronounceable ingredients, or no ingredients listed at all because they're totally natural and unprocessed.
The Ultimate New York Diet was created by David Kirsch and Dr. Oz has even endorsed it. It was made popular by celebrities like Heidi Klum, Liv Tyler and Ellen Barkin. It limits alcohol, bread, sweets and extends to starchy carbs, dairy, and, fruit. For the first two weeks you can only have 900-1000 calories a day.
While any nutritionist is going to endorse cutting out alcohol, sugar, artificial sweeteners, all things you don't need.
Dietitian and nutritionist Kristi King worries the results may not be lasting. She says, "The very low calorie diet of which people are consuming 800-1000 calories a day is not going to be enough to sustain you." Kristi does like that these plans get people to eat lean proteins and vegetables.
Dr. Oz says it's reasonable for a short period of time to eat a very low calorie diet. Once you pass the first two weeks, you've jump started the weight loss. After that, you can follow a diet that's less restrictive. He says The Ultimate New York Diet has been used for years with success.
