Liberty County deputy rear-ended, injured in crash

DAYTON, Liberty County – A deputy with the Liberty County Sheriff's Office was injured in a car accident Thursday morning.

The Liberty County Sheriff's Office said Corporal James Ott was sitting in his patrol car and stopped in traffic on Highway 321 and Highway 1960 in Dayton around 6:50 a.m. That's when, according to investigators, another driver hit him from behind.

Ott was taken to the hospital with neck injuries.

Investigators said the driver was Niesha Nicole Swift, of Beaumont.

According to a statement given by Swift, she is an officer with the Texas Department of Corrections and had just left work. Investigators said Swift told them she had dozed off at the wheel and ran into Ott's car.

Neither Swift nor her passenger were injured.

Both vehicle suffered minor damage.

The Department of Public Safety investigated the crash.

Swift was charged with failure to control speed and no Texas driver's license.
