LEAGUE CITY, Texas – Police arrested a 49-year-old League City woman who is accused of hitting and killing a man with her car then driving away from the scene.
Dena McKenzie is now charged with accident involving death, which is a second-degree felony. Bond for her was set at $25,000.
On March 14, investigators said McKenzie was driving on Marina Bay Drive at 2:30 a.m. when she hit 45-year-old Kevin Munson, who was riding his bicycle.
A short time after the accident, a woman was spotted down the road, she stopped and pulled a damaged part of her car out from under the wheel and stuck it in her back seat. She then drove off. The whole thing was captured by a nearby surveillance camera.
For several days, League City police tried to identify the woman in the video. They put it on Facebook, where it received more than 100,000 views and it was released to local news media.
A tip lead them to McKenzie. Police confirmed to Local 2 that McKenzie is a registered nurse.
"This is an example of how the use of social media, news media and law enforcement work together to solve crimes," said Lt. Bruce Whitten with the Criminal Investigations Division. "In almost every crime, someone has information. Don't ever assume that the police already know, report what you saw."
People who knew the victim said he was a sweet man who rode his bicycle a lot. It wasn't uncommon for Munson to go for a ride late a night or early in the morning to clear his head.
"It really hurt me when my apartment manager came and knocked on my door and told me that he had been killed and left in the street to die," said Diane Prince, a friend and neighbor to Munson. "I believe she could have stayed with him, whether it was her fault or not, you don't just leave a person like a piece of trash in the street."
