Lake Jackson on alert as Brazos River continues rising

Brazos River predicted to raise more than 53 feet by Friday

LAKE JACKSON, Texas – Lake Jackson is on alert as the National Weather Service predicts the Brazos River will rise above 50 feet by Tuesday at the Rosharon Gauge. It is then forecast to rise to more than 53 feet by Friday.

City officials said the rise of water in the Brazos River will put considerable water into the Oyster Creek and Bastrop Bayou watersheds north and east of Harris Reservoir, possibly exceeding levels in Oyster Creek seen in the 1991/1992 flood.

Officials said that while they don't expect to see water threaten any homes, water that fills up drainage ditches may back up into the street systems. Pumps located along the creek will be put to use when needed.

The city said it will continue monitoring the situation and provide daily updates.
