KPRC2 reporter Ryan Korsgard takes you inside Houston Boat Show

HOUSTON – From a small remote-controlled boat to a million-dollar yacht, you can find everything at the Houston Boat Show.

Organizers said there were more than 1,000 boats that range from ski, wakeboarding to yachts. Organizers said this was the largest indoor boat show in the country.

My dad always said the boat show could be an indicator of the economy. When the economy does well, he said you would see larger boats. During lean years, he said the smaller, more affordable boats are more abundant.

There seemed to be a mix of small boats to large boats at the show this year. They ranged from kayaks to yachts.

Teak wood seems to be "in" on board boats this year. There was a fair amount of the real thing.  That's the stuff that needs upkeep and oil often in order to keep it up and looking fresh. There is also a fair amount of faux teak. It looks sharp and feels like a stiff foam.

Blue LED lighting also seems to be "in" both on board boats and in RVs. For practical reasons, it draws little voltage. For decorative reasons, it looks pretty cool on board watercraft.

Along with boats, there were recreational vehicles that ranged from a "pop-up" camper (like my family used on vacation as a kid) all the way up to fifth-wheel trailers that connect to a pickup or a truck.

You could find living rooms fit for a king inside those large RV's. Some even had ceiling fans, fireplaces and full entertainment centers.

Given that we live along the Gulf of Mexico, I was surprised to find only one company selling sailboats. I remember, as a child, going to boat shows and seeing many sailboat dealers. What you do not see with sails, you see boats with speed at the boat show. Some (pictured in my slide show) include propellers that seem to be "reversed."

Dealers said these are safer than traditional propellers when someone is wakeboarding or surfing right behind the boat's stern.

The big boat that got a lot of attention at the boat show was the 420 Sea Ray Sundancer. It is as much a floating home as it is a yacht. Sliding doors separate the "indoor" part from the outdoor. With a retractable sun roof, the two are pretty seamless. The back deck lowers into the water.

Think of it as a sun deck that gently descends into a backyard pool.

The back deck also can lift some personal watercraft out of the water. Downstairs, the front berth can separate into two beds. Just behind the cabin, and under the upper cockpit, you will find the master stateroom. For a boat, it is a huge room where even a tall captain can stand up.

There are vendors selling everything from art to property, mattresses to boating accessories and insurance to used boats.

The thing that might stop you the first is the food along the vendor row.

As you can imagine, the crowds flock to the show on the weekends. My suggestion? Come on a weekday.

The earlier in the day, the better. You can easily get on board the boats and ask lots of questions. Just remember, take off your shoes. It's a boater courtesy on land or at sea.

The boat show continues daily at NRG Center through Sunday.
