Katy ISD holds job fair to find more bus drivers

KATY, Texas – The Katy Independent School District held a transportation job fair to fill several bus driver positions.

The job fair was held at Morton Ranch High School from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday.

"We reduced the number of bus routes from last year because we did not have the number of bus drivers to fill the positions to sustain those routes," Katy ISD spokesman Steve Stanford said.

After parents were notified that routes would be dropped, they voiced their concern regarding the safety of their children walking to and from school.

"We've been listening to parents concerns and we've added four routes last week and another one this week. We will continue to evaluate whether we should add more because of safety concerns," said Stanford.

Applicants will be asked to complete a driving record screening.

Drivers will need to work a split shift and drive in a safe and on-time manner.

The starting wage is $13.31 per hour.

Qualifications include:

  • must be able to obtain a commercial drivers license and endorsements (Katy ISD will provide behind-the-wheel instruction and classroom assistance) and pass the Texas bus driver's training course
  • must be in good physical condition and be able to pass the yearly, required physical and drug test examinations (district paid)
  • must be 21 years of age
  • must have a high school diploma or a GED
  • must possess a driver's license
