HOUSTON -

A plan for the Houston Astrodome is ready for Harris County Commissioners to decide.

It was once known as the Eighth Wonder of the World, but more recently the Houston Astrodome has been known as a multimillion dollar eyesore. Sitting closed and unused for years, the big question has been whether to use if or destroy it.

The Harris County Sports and Convention Corporation proposed it be called the “New Dome Experience,” which means instead of being demolished, the dome would be renovated and turned into a 350,000-square-foot exhibition center which include creating another 400,000-square-feet of plaza and green space outside the building.

Edgardo Colon is the Chairman of the Harris County Sports and Convention Corporation and says this is the best way to use the iconic structure and still be able to get value from the first of its kind facility. Colon is a guest on this week's Houston Newsmakers with Khambrel Marshall and also talks about how the “New Dome” can be paid for.

Also joining Khambrel this week is Harris County Judge Ed Emmett. He and the Harris County Commissioners will officially receive the HCSCC's recommendation on June 25 and will decide what course of action to take from there. Judge Emmett has gone on record as a supporter of the plan so far. How will other commissioners vote? Will there even be a vote? And if so when? What is the timetable for any action to be taken and will it be done in time for the Super Bowl event in 2017. Judge Emmett weighs in on all those questions.

Also this week, Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure recently announced that several Komen races were being cut this year. Is Houston included in those cuts? What kind of confusion has been generated by the announcement? Jessica Manning is a breast cancer survivor and Susan G. Komen volunteer. She says she found her breast cancer because of Susan G. Komen for the Cure and says the announcement by the national office is causing confusion at the local level. Manning sets the record straight.

Great conversation and information on this week's “Houston Newsmakers with Khambrel Marshall.” Watch it Sunday at 10 a.m., right after “Meet the Press with David Gregory.”
