HOUSTON -

Houston furniture salesman and icon Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale was presented Monday with the 5115th Daily Point of Light Award.

President and Mrs. George H. W. Bush joined their son Neil, who serves as chairman of the Points of Light, to present the award to Mattress Mack at the former president's west Houston office.

A press release sent by President Bush's office notes that Mattress Mack has given over 10,000 speeches over 30 years at no charge throughout the Houston area including anti-drug messages to school children, motivational speeches to business organizations and inspirational life talks to non-profits, as well as founding the Peace of Mind Foundation for those affected by Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, starting his annual Gallery Furniture Christmas Giveaway for needy households, furnishing hundreds of homes for veterans, and funding multiple youth and educational programs.

The Daily Point of Light Award was started during the first Bush administration, during which 1,020 individual Americans and organizations were recognized for their selfless community service. This is the first time, however, that President Bush has personally nominated a candidate for the award.
