SPLENDORA, Texas – Two children have been found living in a school bus, investigators said.
Montgomery County Precinct 4 deputy constable said someone called the Justice of the Peace about 10 a.m. Wednesday to report the children in a bus on a property on Three S near Diamond.
Investigators said the children, an 11-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy, are siblings.
The school bus had been converted into living quarters, but the conditions were poor, detectives said.
"There's a restroom in the school bus ... electricity, water connected to the bus," Constable Rowdy Hayden said.
The children did not have much food. There was a refrigerator in another building on the property, officials said.
"I made contact with (Children's Protective Services) and the children's aunt," Hayden said. "(The aunt) has a day job, goes to work."
The aunt lives in a building on the property where the converted bus was parked. She claimed that she helps look after the kids as best she can, but she works 12-hour shifts, officials said.
Detectives said the aunt told them that the children's parents were both in federal prison and had been there since December 2010.
The 11-year-old said that she and her brother have everything they need.
"We've got hot water, cold water, shower, two closets, a pair of bunk beds," the girl said.
The girl said that she and her brother were homeschooled by her aunt.
Children's Protective Services has taken emergency custody of the children. They have been placed in a foster home.
Child Protective Services said there will be an emergency hearing in Montgomery County on Thursday morning to file an affidavit.Â
The constable said it will be up to the Montgomery County District Attorney to decided if charges will be filed in this case.
