Deer Park High raises money for Manvel High students killed in crash

MANVEL, Texas – Support is growing for a community still in mourning after a deadly crash killed three Manvel High School students.

The devastating crash on Jan. 7 claimed the lives of three promising students: Sara Silvas, Zori Petrova and Joshua Rodriguez.

"Just knowing you're not going to be able to see them in the halls anymore, you know, see them put smiles on other people's faces. It's an emotional thing," said Manvel High School senior Hunter Teague.

Over the last week, their peers at Manvel High have had to cope with their sudden deaths. But Friday they got some much needed support from their friends at Deer Park High School.

"This is something we want to do to reach out to them," said Deer Park High School Ronda Kouba.

In the days following the crash, Deer Park students and staff raised a total of $2,000 for Manvel.

"It's devastating and we thought, well what could we do to help. That's what we're there for," said Deer Park High School senior Luis Guajardo.

They also wrote letters of sympathy to the entire community.

"There are times when our teams will play each other. We've come over here for playoff games and there are some connections with students knowing other students here," Kouba said.

Proof that two high school rivalries can lean on each other when it matters most.

"It's going to be a hard road getting through it, but they just know that we're here for them whenever they need something and whenever they need support we're just a phone call away," said Guajardo.

The school plans to use the money to memorialize the three students. One idea includes planting three trees at the school in their honor.
