Youth Football Game Stopped By Lawsuit

ALVIN, Texas – A youth championship football game won't be played as scheduled because of a lawsuit.

Last week, the Galveston Hurricane defeated the Alvin Yellowjackets, earning them the right to square off in the Junior Super Bowl.

The big game has been postponed because of a lawsuit.

The lawsuit claims the coach for the Yellow Jackets filed a complaint claiming that the Hurricanes violated Texas Intercity Football rules by not allowing all of its players to participate in the minimum number of 15 plays.

The lawsuit claims that complaint led to the Hurricanes being disqualified from playing in the big game.

"Texans take it very seriously," resident Bruce Baker said. "You say it's fun, but it is serious on the other hand."

According to documents filed in Galveston County, the Alvin Yellowjackets didn't have all the facts when they filed that protest. The lawsuit was filed to temporarily stop the Junior Super Bowl and to get the Hurricanes back in the game.

"The hurricanes defeated the Alvin Yellowjackets, 19-13, and earned the right to represent their community in the championship game. The lawsuit was filed to protect the rights of the Galveston team," a statement from the Hurricanes read.

Attorneys for the Hurricanes got a victory Friday. A judge ruled to postpone the game until there is a hearing on the lawsuit. That hearing was scheduled for Monday.

"I guess the courts are there for a reason: to settle disputes," Baker said. "This is a dispute, so, it's there to help."

Officials with Texas Intercity Football and the Yellowjackets' coach declined to comment.
