Inappropriate photo shared among Houston ISD middle school students on social media

HOUSTON – School, students and social media are not a good combination, according to concerned parents, who late Tuesday afternoon learned of an investigation at Houston ISD's Frank Black Middle School involving all three.

In a letter to parents, school administrators said they recently discovered an inappropriate photo circulating on social media among several students.

"Instagram, Twitter, these kids now, this generation, it's just social media everything. That's the scary part. You don't even know what your kid has unless you are literally on top of them," parent Susan Cortez said.

While they don't believe the picture was taken on campus, they immediately contacted HISD police due to the nature of the image.

Erika Rubio refuses to let her 14-year-old daughter use any of the social media apps popular with teens.

"I think it's not safe for the kids and a lot of things can happen on social media. I'd rather my kids stay out of all that," Rubio said.

The school said the parents on those students involved were notified immediately.

HISD released a statement to KPRC 2 that read in part, "We take these situations very seriously as student safety is always HISD's top priority."

Administrators are encouraging parents to talk to their kids about texting and social media.

"If it happened, we need to talk about it. If it happened it shouldn't be," parent Jon Severson said.
