Illegal substance found in child's bag at Baytown Head Start Center

BAYTOWN, Texas – Officials with Harris County Department of Education confirm an illegal substance was found at the Baytown Head Start Center last Friday.

A parent reported that their child brought home a bag containing an unidentified substance. The girl told her parent that she got the bag from another child.

The parent gave the bag to the center's manager, who then contacted Baytown police.

Police confirmed the bag contained an illegal substance, but officials did not identify the substance.

Investigators said no students were harmed.

Children's Protective Services is also investigating this matter.

County School Superintendent James Colbert released a statement that read in part: "Please know that I have directed our already-observant staff to be even more vigilant of the items that our students bring into and out of the center on a daily basis. Rest assured that the safety of our students is our top priority."
