HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – Charges have been filed against the man blamed in the fatal crash that killed a Harris County deputy early Sunday morning.
Officials said the crash happened around 3:10 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of West Little York and North Shepherd Drive in north Houston.
Sgt. Dewayne Polk was driving home from an extra job in his Chevy Silverado. Investigators said the 16-year law enforcement veteran had a green light and pulled into the intersection.
Houston police said he was then hit by Andres Munos, 22, who ran a red light.
"As he pulled into the intersection he was struck on the driver's side, t-boned by a GMC truck going at a high rate of speed and it struck him full impact," said Houston Police PIO John Cannon.
Polk died at the scene.
Officers said it appeared Munos was drunk and did not attempt to stop at the red light. Munos is not a U.S. citizen. Immigration has been notified of his arrest.
Munos suffered minor injuries and was taken to Ben Taub Hospital.
"Evidence in the GMC and what he told us lead us to believe that he was intoxicated," said Cannon.
Munos appeared before a magistrate judge Monday morning. Through an interpreter, Munos heard the allegations that he was drunk at the time of the crash, and is being held on the charge of intoxication manslaughter. He is being held without bond.
