Hundreds turn out for Houston watch parties, protests for presidential inauguration

HOUSTON – As President Donald Trump was sworn into office Friday, dozens of Houstonians cheered.

“It’s the best day for America. America has been born again today,” Dr. Francisca Nkadi said.

Waving flags, people filled the Original Ninfa’s on Navigation to watch the historic moment.

“This is the most exciting day of my life, to watch Donald John Trump become the President of the United States,” Bruce Badeau said.

Supporters believe President Trump will bring positive change.

“We’re very hopeful that everything is going to change for us. Jobs, the safety of the country, you name it,” Julio Torres said.

But others felt differently.

Protesters held two rallies in Houston against the president. Outside the Leland Federal Building, they even used a bat to hit a Trump piñata.

“There are a lot of things that are really at play right now. It’s no longer about words, he is in power now, and a lot of our communities are in danger,” Abraham Espinosa said.

Some carried signs saying, “Resist Trump,” and, “Not Our President.” One woman said she wants people to stand up and take action.

“We can’t just show up every four years and vote, we have to actually get in and get involved,” Katie Tyler said.

Still, President Trump supporters said it’s time for everyone to unite around our new president.

“I think he’s going to be a marvelous president. I think the world needs to take a step back and give him a chance to do his job,” Judy Ross said.
