Houston police said Cruz and a friend picked up Black and Trevino for a drug deal on Friday.

Black and Trevino did not have the money for the drugs and planned to rob Cruz and his friend, investigators said.

Detectives said Black and Trevino fatally shot Cruz in the 13100 block of Joliet in east Houston. Black and Trevino stole Cruz's pickup truck and kidnapped and beat his friend, investigators said.

The friend was able to escape the vehicle as it was stopped at a red light, police said.

Black and Trevino were arrested on Tuesday and are being held in the Harris County Jail without bond.
