HOUSTON – Police say a 14-year-old was shot in the head by his 15-year-old stepbrother in southeast Houston.
The incident happened around 11:40 a.m. Sunday in the 8100 block of Bonner Drive.
At first, police said the boy who pulled the trigger was scared and made up a story about a masked man breaking into the home.
"There was an intruder dressed in all black that came in through the back, shot one of the juveniles, then fled," said Sgt. Kevin Tolls.
Investigators said there were holes in the story, and as they continued to question the boy, his story changed.
Police said the 14-year-old admitted that he and his stepbrother were playing with the loaded gun when it accidentally went off.
"After speaking with surviving juvenile, he admitted that several months ago he had found a revolver, and that they kept it hidden at the house, and kept it away from parents," said Tolls. "They were playing with it when the trigger was accidentally pulled."
The 14-year-old was sent to Ben Taub Hospital in critical condition.
No charges will be filed against the 15-year-old who pulled the trigger. Police are calling this an accident.
Houston police's dive team searched for the gun in a bayou near a golf course off of Bliss Road, a block away from the incident. Police said they were unable to find the gun.
