HOUSTON - A struggle with an accused car thief led to an officer involved shooting in southwest Houston on Sunday.
It all started around 4:30 a.m. Sunday, when an HPD unit was notified of a stolen car spotted at an apartment complex on Fondren. When the unit arrived, the officers noticed the stolen car pulling into a parking spot.
According to reports, the officers approached the suspect to arrest him, but he resisted and a fight began. Apparently the suspect tried to grab one of the officer's Taser and gun. At one point, a female officer became pinned between a car door and the patrol car. Fearing for her life and his own, the other officer shot at the thief.
The suspect, later identified as 17-year-old Demontre Bridges, suffered a graze wound to his chest.
Bridges took off running and officers called for backup.
Police said a K-9 unit arrived and located Bridges inside the apartment complex.
Bridges was treated at a nearby hospital.
He faces charged of attempting to disarm a police officer, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and evading arrest. The charges were being filed by the Fort Bend County District Attorney's Office.
