HOUSTON – Police say a gunman opened fire in a neighborhood on Houston's southwest side, hitting one person.
Houston police say just after 10 a.m. Tuesday, someone driving a red pick up near the intersection of Bryant Ridge and Boonridge Road opened fire on a 17-year-old who was standing on the side of the road. Neighbors who live in this southwest Houston community heard the gunfire but thought it was fireworks.
"I just heard a big boom like somebody was shooting on fireworks and I saw some cops running down the road going that direction," said Lois Barke.
Paramedics rushed the victim to the Ben Taub Hospital where he is recovering. There is no word on the extent of his injuries.
Residents say it's disconcerting to know the suspect hasn't been caught and detectives tell Local 2 the motive behind the whole thing is still under investigation.
"You're always concerned. There is so much going on. There is always a concern with the little kids running around. You never know when you're out having fun if someone is going to run up on you and something happen to you," said Barke.
Police are hoping the victim may be able to shed some light on what led up to everything.
Police say they don't have a good description of the shooter and say all they know right now is that he left the area in a red truck.
