A police officer and several others, including two young children, were injured during a two-car crash in southwest Houston.

According to reports, a Houston Police Department officer was heading south on Fondren Road around midnight Saturday, en route to assist with a possible stolen vehicle.

As he approached the entrance of an apartment complex, a woman driving a Ford Crown Victoria turned in front of the officer, trying to enter the complex, police said.

The officer slammed on his brakes but was unable to avoid a collision.

Police said after the two cars crashed, the Crown Victoria hit a brick column and then a metal fence, which fell onto another  parked car.

The officer was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, investigators said, and the children -- ages 4 and 7 months -- along with a female passenger in the Crown Victoria were transported in stable condition.

Police said the driver of the Crown Victoria was not intoxicated at the time of the crash, and charges are still pending.
