HPD officer retires after shooting burglary suspect

HOUSTON – A Houston police officer retired on March 9 after shooting a burglary suspect accused of trying to steal electronics from his home on Feb. 16.

Last month, Police Chief Art Acevedo told KPRC what led to a confrontation between an accused burglar and a 22- year veteran of the department. B. Johnson was off-duty, but in uniform when the alarm at his home went off.

According to police, the security system at the home allowed Johnson to see a man burglarizing his house.

Police said Johnson headed home and found the man he saw on surveillance cameras walking away from his house. Investigators said the pair got into a altercation.

The chief said Johnson claimed he fired his gun after seeing the suspected thief holding a long fork with sharp tines.

Johnson has been relieved of duty and at home since the day of the shooting. He retired on March 9.

We tried to speak with Johnson at his house, but there was no answer.
