HOUSTON - A man accused of fatally shooting a mother is also suspected of attacking another woman, detectives said.
Houston police have charged Neil Mukherjee with capital murder in the death of Vanessa Rodriguez.
Rodriguez was at her home in the 8500 block of Pitner with her 1-year-old daughter on Nov. 8. Police said they believe she answered a knock on the door and was shot in front of her daughter, who was sitting in a high chair.
All that was stolen was her iPhone, detectives said.
Investigators said Mukherjee's distinctive tattoo under his right eye reads "100." That identifying mark linked him to another crime, officials said.
An hour after Rodriguez was killed, there was a home invasion occurred in the 15000 block of Kuykendahl in northwest Harris County. Police said they think that Mukerjee targeted the woman, who was walking home with a baby.
"As she's walking to her apartment, the suspect follows her in, tried to get in and rob her with pistol. (He) kicked the door in, pistol-whipped her, fired a shot and fled the scene," said Sgt. W.L. Meeler.
That woman and her child were not wounded.
Investigators said they believe there could be more victims.
"He moved to Donna, Texas last year. We feel he may have been fleeing from something," said Meeler.
Police said they also believe he knew exactly who to target for victims.
"He targeted females home alone in the middle of day, possibly undocumented," said Meeler.
Police said they think Mukherjee sold the gun used in both attacks on Nov. 8 to someone in the Greenspoint area.
"Obviously, we want to get that gun off the streets," said Meeler. "If the person he sold it to is out there and he sold you that gun, please turn it in. Basically, there will be no questions asked."
Anyone with information about other incidents Mukherjee may be connected to is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
