HOUSTON – Police believe a man found dead outside his northwest Houston home was the victim of some sort of drug deal gone wrong.

Residents in the area reported to police they heard a loud bang around 5:15 a.m. Friday morning.

Several neighbors went outside to investigate but did not notice anything suspicious, police said.

At around 5:40 a.m., a passerby saw the 56-year-old male victim lying in the front yard, located in the 5100 block of Poinciana and called police.

When officers got there, the victim was dead from an apparent shotgun wound to the back.

Responding officers also found branches of marijuana plants strewn on the roadway west of the residence. Upon further investigation, they authorities found several marijuana plants in one of the bedrooms of the house.

Neighbors reported to police that they saw two vehicles leaving the area immediately after hearing the gunshot. They are described only as a light brown 2000-2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer and a white four-door sedan.

The victim's identity has not been released pending family notification.
