HPD: Officer fires at suspect in attempted robbery at SE Houston gas station

HOUSTON – An Houston police officer fired his gun at a man authorities said was attempting to rob a gas station in southeast Houston Friday night.

The officer, who was working an approved extra job, was sitting in his vehicle outside a Valero on Lawndale and 76th Street around 9:15 p.m.

He saw two men approach the building from the side and put on ski masks. One entered the Valero and the other remained outside the door as a lookout.

The officer saw the man inside attempt to rob the cashier. The officer then got out of his car and began to approach the building.

The lookout let the man inside the gas station know that there was an officer approaching the building and fled inside toward the back of the store.

The man inside raised a gun and began to point it at the officer. The officer discharged his duty weapon more than once and the man, 16 years old, was struck.

Officer K. Huey, who discharged his weapon in this incident, is assigned to the North Patrol Division and was sworn in as an officer in July 1995.  Officer Huey was not injured.

The officer yelled to the lookout, 16, who was hidden in the back of the store. He surrendered and was taken into custody without incident. He was not injured.

The wounded man was taken to Ben Taub Hospital in critical condition.

The shooting is being investigated by Homicide and Internal Affairs divisions.
