HPD: Homeowner shoots burglary suspect

HOUSTON – A southwest Houston homeowner fired at burglary suspects who broke into a neighbor's house Wednesday, police said.

Houston police said the shooting happened at 11:15 a.m. in the 11200 block of Leawood.

"A neighbor witnessed three males bringing property out of his neighbor's house," Sgt. K. J. Morgan said. "He went back inside, retrieved a pistol, came outside, confronted them. One of them reached toward his waist like he was pulling a gun. The homeowner fired three shots."

Witnesses said they saw the wounded man about a block away from the scene. They said he claimed to be an innocent victim.

"He was just hollering, 'Help me. Help me. I'm going to die,'" witness Audrey Pavelka said.

Police said three other men were involved in the burglary. They got away, but they left what they wanted to steal behind, police said.

"They didn't get away with any property," Morgan said. "They had numerous items ... a laptop, television, other items stacked up inside."

The wounded man is expected to be OK. Descriptions of the other men have not been released.
