The baby girl, River Ramsey, and her mother were traveling in the 9000 block of the North Freeway when their Ford Escape was struck from behind by a Chevy Tahoe at the Gulf Bank intersection. The Escape then slammed into a pickup truck.

Police said baby River was not properly restrained in the vehicle. She was rushed to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where she later died. Her mother was also injured in the crash. The pickup driver was not harmed.

Romero, who was driving the Tahoe, and two occupants bailed out of the vehicle and fled on foot.
One of Romero's family members called police and told them he confessed to causing the crash. Also, his driver license and other items were left in the wreckage, which helped police track him down.

Romero told police he panicked and ran away because he was scared.

His bail was set $10,000.
