A 6-year-old boy is dead after he was hit by an armored van in north Houston.
The wreck happened shortly before noon near the 1800 block of Lorraine Street and Elysian, near downtown Houston. Police say an armored van was heading north on Lorraine and turning onto Elysian when the child, his 31-year-old mother and another woman were crossing the street.
According to accident scene investigators, the trio failed to yield to oncoming traffic and were struck by the van.
The van's female driver was visibly distraught after the accident.
"Very sad. Didn't look good," said neighbor Mike Snipes.
Someone placed a cross at the spot where he died.
While police conducted a field sobriety test on the female driver, they say she did not show any signs of intoxication at the scene. The investigation is continuing. It's unclear what, if any charges, the driver will face.
"They used to have speed traps right here but they stopped. If they were to keep doing that maybe this kind of stuff wouldn't happen," said Daniel Gonzalez.
The child was taken to LBJ hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police are not releasing the 6-year-old's name until the medical examiner is able to notify family members.
The boy's mother was also taken to LBJ hospital. Her condition is unknown.
The woman who was with the pair was treated at the scene for her injuries.
This is the second accident Friday in which a child was killed. Earlier, a neighbor accidentally hit and killed a 4-year-old who ran behind a pickup truck in northwest Harris County.
