HPD: 2 killed after multi-vehicle accident; driver distracted by dog

HOUSTON – Two people are dead after a hit-and-run crash that may have been triggered by the actions of a dog.

Earline Jones was getting ready to marry Rick Robertson, but now she's planning his funeral after he was fatally struck Sunday on the 610 Loop near Long Drive.

"He's a good guy," Jones said. "A good heart and cared about everybody. It just (doesn't) make sense."

Robertson had just left his southeast Houston home and was headed to drop off his puppy at his mother's home, but the dog may have triggered a deadly string of events.

"The dog was in the car with him and the dog started acting up and he hit a guard rail," Jones said. "The first witness stopped to help him."

Police said that a good Samaritan walked over to help Robertson and make sure he was OK. Jeremiah Horton also stopped to help and witnessed a white Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck speeding towards them.

"Just a split second a truck zoomed by, just come and hit him immediately, " Horton said. "At the same time of impact, I jumped over the guard rail and the second truck hit him. It was real sad."

The driver of the first truck left his vehicle behind and left the scene. A few seconds later, a second truck ended up running over one of the victims again.

"The second truck hit Rick and pinned him up under the truck and killed him," Jones said.

The driver of the white truck left it at the scene, but ran away before police arrived.
