Shoplifting suspect killed in wreck after fleeing store in Kingwood

KINGWOOD, Texas – A shoplifting suspect was killed in an accident after he and two others fled a store in Kingwood, according to police.

The wreck was reported Wednesday around 2 p.m. under the overpass of the Eastex Freeway and Kingwood Drive.

Police said witnesses spotted three people shoplifting from a nearby store. The trio took off in a red Nissan Xterra at a high rate of speed on Kingwood Drive.

The driver ran the red light at the intersection of the Eastex Freeway service road. The Xterra hit the front of a white Toyota Tundra pickup truck and the driver of the Nissan lost control of the vehicle and stuck a pillar underneath the freeway.

The driver died at the scene, and the other two men jumped out of the Xterra and ran.

Police eventually took the two suspects into custody a few blocks away from where the accident took place. They were taken to the hospital for minor injuries.

The driver of the Toyota was not injured.
