2 dead after wrong-way crash involving suspected drunken driver

North Loop shut down early Monday for investigation

HOUSTONTwo people are dead after a wrong-way crash on the North Loop at Irvington Boulevard.

Houston police said the two female victims and another woman were in a car that was driving east on the 610 North Loop around 2:30 a.m. Monday.

Authorities said at the same time a suspected drunken driver was in the eastbound lanes, but driving his Ford sedan west in the opposite direction of traffic.

The wrong-way driver collided with the women's vehicle head-on. Police said the woman behind the wheel survived the crash, but her two passengers died on impact.

The two passenger have been identified as Eliselda Martinez, 22, and Allison Gallegos, 23.

According to police, the suspected drunken driver survived with minor injuries. 

No charges have been filed at this time, as the investigation is ongoing. 

Houston police said two other vehicles were able to swerve and avoid hitting the wrong-way driver. Officers warn that drivers need to stay alert when driving in the early morning hours.
