Houstonians impressed by Clinton's DNC speech

HOUSTON – As President Barack Obama prepared to give his nomination speech Thursday night, Democratic National Convention delegates, including many from Houston, were still buzzing about the fiery speech delivered by former President Bill Clinton on Wednesday night.

Clinton told delegates and the television audience that Obama is on the right track and needs more time to fix the problems he inherited.

"No president, not me nor any of my predecessors, no one could have fully repaired all the damage he found in just four years," said Clinton.

His speech seemed to fire up the faithful at the convention and resonate with many voters who remain undecided.

"President Clinton knocked it out of the ballpark," Harris County Democratic Party Chair Lane Lewis said. "He made the case why Republicans have it wrong and we Democrats have it right.'

Lewis said he's not concerned that the former president will overshadow the sitting president, who was preparing to give the political speech of bid for reelection.

"I think Obama will talk about how he saved the industry and how he gave millions of Americans affordable health care, while Republicans said, ‘No, no, no,'" said Lewis.

But Republicans are also watching and they argue that Clinton was simply being a good foot soldier for the Democratic party and voters are not fooled by his message.

"What he said is a bag of cards and tricks to deceive them to support President Barack Obama," said Jared Woodfill, the chairman of the Harris County Republican Party.

Woodfill said he believes the DNC's focus on social issues like abortion and same sex marriage is turning off voters, especially independents, who want to hear Obama focus on the economy.
