Houston Zoo unveils expanded elephant yard

Opens to the public Thursday

HOUSTON – The Houston Zoo is showing off the expanded McNair Asian Elephant habitat.

The construction project took a year to complete. It doubles the elephant complex and includes a 6,500-square-foot barn custom-built to house the zoo's three bull elephants, Thailand, Tucker and Baylor.

The habitat also features a boardwalk with an unobstructed view of the elephants in their new yard and nearly 160,000-gallon pool.

The expanded habitat opens to the public on Thursday.
