Houston woman competes on "America's Got Talent" after surviving plane crash

HOUSTON – A Houston woman and University of St. Thomas graduate is set to appear on America’s Got Talent on Tuesday night to share her voice -- and her story -- with the entire world.

Kechi Okwuchi grew up in Nigeria and at the age of 16 experienced a tragedy that caught the world’s attention.

In 2005, Okwuchi was on Sosoliso Airlines Flight 1145 when it crashed in Nigeria, killing 107 people on board. Okwuchi was one of only two survivors.

As part of a harrowing recovery, Okwuchi was flown to Shriner’s Hospital in Galveston in 2007 for treatment, and during her time there, she began to harness her love of singing.

"Lying in the hospital bed bandaged head to foot--music was my escape and that's why it means so much to me,” Okwuchi said.

Okwuchi will now appear before an all-star panel of judges on Tuesday’s episode of America’s Got Talent.

You can see her performance and the judge’s reactions Tuesday on America’s Got Talent, airing from 7 to 9 p.m. on KPRC Channel 2.
