Animals seized from deplorable conditions in Matagorda County

BAY CITY, Texas – More than 30 animals were seized Wednesday from deplorable conditions in Matagorda County, according to the Houston Humane Society.

HHS said the animal cruelty case involves small and large dogs and ball pythons at a residence in Bay City.

The organization said some of the dogs have been living in small, filthy cages and there are reports of large rats attacking the animals.

"This is worst than a third-world prison camp," said Dr. Timothy Harkness, chief veterinarian for the Houston Humane Society. "Extremely unsanitary, disease producing, feces in every cage.  A tremendous amount.  Some dogs did have water.  Some dogs didn't have water.  There are rats running literally everywhere.  When I first came in here, there's probably 30 or 40 rats scattered."

HHS said the animals were transported for evaluation. No charges have been filed as of Wednesday evening.
