Houston residents reacts to newest immigration orders

HOUSTON – Following loud protests across the country, the Department of Homeland Security has issued new orders to put into place the president's plan to increase enforcement of his immigration policy.

That means millions of undocumented people living in the United States could be thrown out.

"I'll tell you what my primary concern is .... the families torn apart by what's going on right now. They have been torn apart before. But this is (going to) enhance the tearing apart of families," said David Atwood, of the Greater Houston Coalition for Justice says it is preparing.

The memos tell all agents to capture and quickly deport every single undocumented immigrant. Rounding up those who have been convicted of a crime would be the highest priority. The greater Houston coalition for justice says it is preparing.

"We are getting some commitments that we will be prepared to address whatever issues .... Constitutional or very unhuman," said Johnny Mata, of the Greater Houston Coalition for Justice.

The directive also requires undocumented immigrants caught entering the country to be jailed instead of released until their hearing date. This directive calls for building more jails, increases the ability of local police to help in immigration enforcement and calls for hiring 10,000 more immigration agents.

"My children are American citizens.  I don't want them to be treated any differently than anybody else just because of the color of our skin or how we look," said Helen Cavazo, who is a daughter of an immigrant.
