Houston Newsmakers April 18: Dean of Texas Senate on campus carry, Texas jails

HOUSTONState Senator John Whitmire (D) Houston says there are still problems with the Texas law allowing concealed guns onto college campuses.

“What really disturbs me is that we’re forcing public universities to have Campus Carry,” he said.” When I know the leadership and a lot of the student bodies are opposed to it, but we gave the private universities the right to opt out.”

Senator Whitmire also weighs in on the loophole that allows Texans to take online courses without ever showing proficiency. The result is a concealed handgun license that is legal in Texas! “It’s just wrong,” he said. He told Houston Newsmakers Host Khambrel Marshall he will get legislative support to change the law that permits it.

Channel 2 Investigates reporter Joel Eisenbaum exposed the loophole with his exclusive story and joins Houston Newsmakers this week with background on what he found.
