HOUSTON – Two Houston neighborhoods have been named among the most dangerous in the country.
The historic neighborhoods of Sunnyside and 3rd Ward boast a thriving educational, artistic and cultural fabric, but they've also been named by the FBI as two of the most dangerous in the U.S.
The website neighborhoodscout.com ranked the 25 most dangerous neighborhoods based on FBI data.
According to their findings, people in the 3rd Ward neighborhood have a 1 in 13 chance of becoming a victim of violent crime. Sunnyside, near Scott street and Wilmington street, came in at number 6 on the list.
City Councilwoman Wanda Adams, who represents both neighborhoods, said she wants to spread a different message. She said she wants the people of Houston to know they shouldn't be afraid to live in the area. She said officials are working every day to make improvements in the area.
"We've removed blight in the area. Some old, abandoned houses have been torn down to spruce economic development in those communities," said Adams.
Official said even though the neighborhoods are on the list, they add history and culture to the city. The University of Houston and Texas Southern University are both located in the 3rd Ward area.
According to the website, the data was based on the rate of violent crimes per 1,000 residents. Communities in Detroit took the first, second and third spots on the list.
