"The most esteemed honor for me has been in serving the membership of the Houston Firefighters' Relief and Retirement Fund since first elected as a trustee (Position I) on the Board in 2006 and elected Chair since January 2010," Clark said in a statement to fund members.

Mayor Sylvester Turner is thanking Clark for his service to the Fire Department and HFRRF. Turner also said negotiations with the fund and the other employee pension boards are progressing.

"My goal remains to work something out that will reduce the city's pension burden while still providing secure and sustainable retirement benefits for our hardworking employees," Turner said. "If all goes as planned, we will complete these negotiations in time to submit a proposal to the Legislature for consideration in the upcoming 2017 session."

A portion of the rest of Clark's message to fund members is below:

"You know when you start this journey that one day retirement from service to this city in this dangerous profession will come. The decision to retire from the Houston Fire Department has arrived with certainty for me after much resolve and consultation with my family, culminating 33 years, and 1 month as a firefighter in the city of Houston Fire Department.

"As you know, this fund has been in numerous conversations about our pension with the leadership of the city of Houston. As I transition from active member to a retiree, negotiations and discussions about our plan with city leadership will continue to move forward. Upon my departure from the fire department and the board to retire, there still remains a truly dedicated team of pension professional and exceptional men and women elected to the board who I know will continue to fight for you; in spite of increased support of the leading voices in our city that seek to surely affect sweeping pension reform across this state that includes our plan.

"Thank you for the privilege to serve the members of the Houston Firefighters' Relief and Retirement Fund as an elected trustee since January 2006."
