HOUSTON – All day long people across Houston have been marking their foreheads with a cross of ashes, in honor of Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent.
But at the corner of Fannin and Cambridge streets, members of the Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church are doing Ash Wednesday a little differently.
It's called "Ashes to Go," a way to fulfill your religious duty if you don't have the time to head to church.
"I think it's awesome," said-18-year-old Christina Pohl. "I think it's chill."
Pohl was one of a few hundred people who had a cross marked on her forehead, while walking or driving down the street on Wednesday morning.
Volunteers with the church stand along the sidewalk, then approach pedestrians or drivers when the stop light turns red.
"Everybody's in a rush," Nick Houston said. "We have limited hours in a day so what better way to still practice religion and not mess up your schedule."
If "Ashes to Go" isn't for you, you can still go the traditional route. There will be services at Palmer Episcopal Church at 6:30 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. Wednesday evening. The church is located at 6221 Main St.
