Houston airport ranks 3rd in most expensive airfare

Travelers pay big to travel through Houston

HOUSTON – As Memorial Day travelers hit the roads and head to the airports, a new government study shows Bush Intercontinental Airport is one of the most expensive in the country.

The U.S. Department of Transportation Bureau of Statistics' study reported that Bush Intercontinental Airport had the third most expensive average airfare for domestic flights in the last quarter of 2012, at $501.

Huntsville, Alabama holds the top spot for expensive fares at $544.

Hobby Airport didn't break the top five for the last quarter of 2012, but the airport did land on another undesirable list. Hobby ranked number two for the biggest fare increase over the last twelve years, with the prices increasing from $289 to $336.

Atlantic City, New Jersey had the least expensive average airfare at $157, among the top 100 airports.
