HOUSTON -

A police chase that started off as an attempted traffic stop in Jefferson County has come to an end in Houston.

According to Beaumont police, the incident happened before 7 p.m. on Interstate 10 near Beaumont.

Police said they initially pulled over the suspect for suspicion of DUI, but he would not stop.  He continued driving into Chambers County, at times reaching speeds of up to 100 miles per hour.

As the chase continued into Houston, the suspect led police down the I-10 East Freeway into downtown. Police said the suspect then went south on the West Loop and around to the South Loop, before proceeding eastbound on the South Loop.

Police said the suspect was pulled over in the parking lot of a restaurant near MLK Boulevard and the South Loop.

"As soon as he drove in, the law just came out everywhere," said Jermaine Norris, who works security at the restaurant where police eventually stopped the suspect's car.  Norris said the cops surrounded the suspect with their guns drawn.

"I told the people to get back, get down," Norris said.  "In case he pulled a gun and started shooting.  I didn't want nobody [sic] to get hurt."

Police took the suspect into custody and transported him to the Harris County jail.  According to reports, he was also wanted for murder in Harris County.

His name was not released.
